Alexia qualified as a registered nurse and midwife in 1981 and specialized in ICU in 1984-1985. After working in cardio-thoracic surgery for many years, she found her niche in Transplant in 1998 when appointed as a transplant coordinator at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. She became the regional manager of transplant services in 2001, a position she continues to hold. She holds a Diploma in Transplant Procurement Management (TPM) from the University of Barcelona (2000). Alexia has presented at various transplant congresses highlighting the many facets of transplant challenges and successes in South Africa. She was recognized as a fellow of the Academy of Nursing of South Africa in 2013 based on her contribution to nursing practice. She has served as the EXCO of the SA Transplantation Society and has been on the organizing committee of 4 congresses in SA. She has served on the Organ Donor Foundation and has been the flight coordinator for the organization since 2002. Alexia has published both in “Progress in Transplantation” and “Organs Tissues and Cells” as well as contributions to various local textbooks on subjects such as brain death, organ donation and serves on the SA Transplant Coordinator Society. Alexia is the National Key Member for South Africa for the European Transplant Coordinator Society and participant in Global Leadership Symposium, 2014 San Diego, California, a UNOS/TPM workshop. Alexia holds a private pilot’s license and her other interests include travel, game and bird watching, and reading.
